In 2014, Toho officially announced the birth of their “G-Con” panel of experts to craft a new Japanese Godzilla film set to hit in 2016. In 2015 the Japanese title was revealed to be ‘Shin-Gojira’, meaning both “New” and “True” Godzilla upon translation. The international title was set as Godzilla: Resurgence, with Funimation picking up the wildly successful TOHO epic for a U.S. release under the title SHIN GODZILLA. Western fans witnessed the modern incarnation of a Japanese Gojira in October of 2016, and the fandom hasn’t been the same since. The film has yet to release on home video for U.S. fans. The title of Toho’s return to the Godzilla franchise is Shin-Gojira, which roughly translates to mean either “True” or “New” Godzilla. The double entendre is purposeful.
